Welcome to Denman Island Community School!
Denman Island is a community of approximately 1,000 people, situated between Vancouver Island and Hornby Island. Our lovely school is nestled between the Denman Island General Store and the Denman Island Community Hall. It is surrounded by trees, a top quality sports field, and our beautiful school garden. On foggy days we listen to the ferry fog horn, on windy days we watch the trees dance, on sunny days we dig in the soil, roll in the grass and play in the warmth. On really, really rainy days we all gather in the gym and have a rousing game of Skittles!
Our school has approximately 35 students from Kindergarten to Grade 7 and as part of the Comox Valley School District our high school students attend Secondary School in Courtenay. We have two classrooms, a Primary class and an Intermediate class. This multi grade/ multi age configuration has many academic as well as social benefits which in turn creates a strong feeling of home and family. Our school has a quality gym, music room, resource room, and a common use area with a kitchen. We work together, play together, eat together and learn together.
Our designation as a Community School is an integral part of our philosophy, culture of learning and growing. The Community School model supports the social, emotional and physical health of both the students and the greater Denman Island community. Community Programs (via the Denman Island Community Education Society) offers free after school programs, a Parent and Tot drop in, evening courses, recreational sports opportunities, extra food for hungry students, a community lunch for the entire school held once a month called Feasty Friday, Teen Night and a Food Bank. As you can see our school not only provides a rich day program for elementary age students, it also embraces and supports lifelong learning for Denman Island pre-schoolers, teens, parents and the wider community as a whole.
The Denman Island students and staff benefit every day from this Community School model and we have a lot of good, healthy fun together as a school community. Currently the whole school is working on a project called ‘Art for Others’. This project allows the students to create their very own art and turn it into printed cards. The money raised from selling these art cards is being used to support the Denman food bank and an international charity the students have selected.
Denman Island Community School strives to promote an awareness of self and others and an appreciation of individual differences within a supportive, purposeful environment. We believe in nurturing a positive attitude in students which will further their intellectual, social, emotional and physical growth.
